TROUPERS AND TROOPERS ... So what are the fun facts this week about "The Frozen Ground," the John Cusack-Nicolas Cage movie about rapist/killer Robert Hansen currently being shot around town? Well, for one thing, the head of FEMA's Alaska office has landed a supporting role in the film. Robert Forgit, who earwigs will remember once did the weather on Channel 2, is playing an Alaska State Trooper who helped put together the case against Bad Bob back in the 1980s.
Ear first encountered Forgit when he was a U.S. Coast Guard officer assigned to Anchorage -- he's still a captain in the reserves. He left the service in the mid-1980s and took a swing at acting, including doing a bunch of "Magnum P.I.s" He got a small part in the whale movie -- oh, all right, "The Big Miracle" -- and now a real part in "The Frozen Ground." His new role is one of the troopers who, along with Glenn Flothe, ran the big confrontation interrogation of Hansen when they finally got a warrant, searched his house and then arrested him.
And, on the other side of the drama, Ron Holmstrom, the voice of all things theater in Anchorage, has been cast as Hansen's defense attorney. In the movie, the character is called Mike Rule but in real life, his lawyer was Fred Dewey.
Not sure why the name change but, if memory serves, Hansen was a lost cause as far as any defense was concerned back then -- good evidence in a couple of cases, his horror of publicity, plea and sentencing at one short hearing, a no-nonsense judge, a quick trip out of state to a federal prison. But Ron says there're lots of juicy scenes before it all gets settled. Earwigs will recall that Ron actually played Hansen in readings at Cyrano's and the Valdez theater conference of Mary Katzke's play "Dancing for the Hunter."
BTW, we (the media) keep calling "The Frozen Ground" a movie about Hansen. Actually, as Ear understands it, the movie is more about Hansen's final victim, Cindy Paulson, who escaped and helped investigators nail him.

ANCHORWOOD . . . Are we having fun or what! Familiar faces working on the movie now shooting around town - "The Frozen Ground" - are popping up everywhere, giving us all something to talk about as the boring season (between fishing and the Legislature) descends.
Alas, the movie folks seem mostly hard-working, well-behaved and even (gasp) nice people, which is not the way Ear prefers things, but never mind:
• Spotted last Saturday night at Villa Nova, talk show host/columnist Shannyn Moore relaxing over a glass of wine in a foursome that included John Cusack. For those of you who just checked in from Saturn, Cusack plays serial rapist/murderer Robert Hansen. He's been talking to people who were around back in Hansen's time, fine-tuning his portrayal of the bad guy, an unusual role for him.
Ear is proud to report that none of the customers who did a double take as they passed his table were tacky enough to bother him for an autograph or phone photo, demonstrating that some Alaskans have class. (Or maybe it's just Villa Nova customers.)
Shannyn is playing Alaska Ambassador for Cusack. Last week she showed him around Anchorage. Next week she's going to take him out in the woods to see if any bears are still awake.
• Later that night, people showing up for a goodbye dinner at the Crow's Nest for John Ross, outgoing CEO of the Alaska Native Heritage Center, had to squeeze past a string of tables where the "Frozen Ground" cast was being treated to dinner by the producers. Cusack was there, as were Nicolas Cage and his wife. Cage plays a composite Alaska State Trooper who nails Hansen. Other diners included writer-director Scott Walker; producer Mark Ordesky; actress Vanessa Hudgens; local actor Robert Forgit, who plays Trooper Wayne Von Clausen; and Katherine LaNasa, who plays Hansen's wife.
If you don't know LaNaca's name, you know her face. She's been in every TV series you've ever seen, most recently "House" and "Burn Notice." All Ear can say is she's going to need some serious makeup and acting skills to dowdy down her shiny blond good looks and dumb down her obvious intelligence to become the "I didn't know nothin' about nothin'" character the former Mrs. Hansen reportedly was.
• No details available but earwigs report rapper 50 Cent and his entourage had dinner at Sullivan's last week. He's an investor in the movie and plays a pimp "managing" one or more of the vanishing strippers.

First Look at Cage and Cusack in The Frozen Ground
First look at American Film Market promo art for writer/director Scott Walker's thriller The Frozen Ground, starring Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, 50 Cent and Vanessa Hudgens.
Based on a true story, Cusack is set to play serial killer Robert Hansen with Cage the police officer who teams with an escaped victim (Hudgens) to catch him. Responsible for the deaths of somewhere between 17 and 21 individuals, Hansen lived in Anchorage, Alaska and, despite a somewhat troubled past, was married with two children and served as a well-known member of the community. After his conviction in 1983, it was theorized that, for years, Hansen had been kidnapping women and then releasing them into the desolate Alaskan wilderness to hunt them for sport.

I had the pleasure of being on location at a shooting of the film "On Frozen Ground". Security was sort of a bear about cameras so I had to hide mine as it was rolling. Around the 11:15 mark you can see Nic Cage getting makeup put on and get into his car which had Vanessa Hudgens in it. Then the onlookers were told to leave.
