Brendan Fraser mightn’t be back, but the special effects budget definitely makes a reprise in the fun family blockbuster “Journey 2 : The Mysterious Island”. Josh Hutcherson, reprising his role from the first ”Journey’ [to the Center of the Earth]‘, and Vanessa Hudgens, hitching a ride to the atoll, talk to Ashleigh about holidaying in Hawaii – er, rather, working in Hawaii – and feeling slightly smaller whenever they stood next to their beefy co-star, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.

Wonderful premiere last night. Was that the first time you guys had seen “Journey 2″? Completely cut?

VH: Yeah.
JH : Yeah, Yeah. I saw a rough version before the holidays but I hadn’t seen it with the score and the final animations and whatnot.

You’ve both done quite a few special effectsy type films now. How do you find it, having now done a few?

VH : It’s fun. It’s interesting. As an actor you’re basically running around like a big kid playing pretend all day. Just as long as you’re well informed about what’s going on and have a good director who can show you what you’re actually running from. It’s fun.

Is it a lot of green screen or is there… nothing there, and you’re going to be told what’s going to be there later on?
JH : It was a bit of both. In the case of the lizard chase it was, ‘There’s gonna be a lizard behind you’, so there was a lizard behind you. The scene in which we were flying with the bumblebees was all done with greenscreen; you were basically on a mechanical bull that flew around in the air, that they lifted up onto green screen.

Josh, how did it make you feel hearing that Brendan Fraser wasn’t coming back for the sequel?

JH : I was obviously disappointed because I love Brendan and I had a great time working with him but I was also excited to be working with Dwayne [Johnson], I thought he was perfect for the role and I was really excited to see what he was going to bring to it.

And working with ‘The Rock’ would have been heaps of fun but did you find it hard to keep up with that physical pace that he set?

JH : Yeah, he’s a very physical guy – he’s huge, he’s like six-foot-twelve and like four-hundred pounds. So it was definitely physically intimidating. And no matter who stands next to him he definitely makes them feel small.

I assume working in Hawaii is different from working in L.A?

VH : Things really are a lot more relaxed, time really isn’t…
JH : .. Some of the time.
VH : Okay, some of the time. It was just relaxing… and stunning, it’s beautiful there. It didn’t feel like we were going to work every day – it wasn’t work.
JH : All the people were just great, they’re like [in Hawaiian accident] ‘It’s Okay mon, Soda time!’

Vanessa, your next project is “Gimme Shelter”. How’s that going?

VH : Good, really good [but] I have not seen any of it. But I talked to my director and he said that everything is going great and hopefully we’ll make our way into Cannes – I would love to be there for the movie.

And Josh, “Hunger Games” coming out soon. What scene are you most looking forward to when it’s all cut and edited?

JH : Well, the scene between myself and Katniss in the cave.. that’s a really awesome sequence and you get to see the whole relationship kind of take a turn there, so that was fun to shoot and I’m excited to see that. And also all the stuff, at the beginning, with the cornucopia where everyone rushes in, because that was really fun to shoot and I’m excited to see how Gary [Ross, the director] cut it together.

And “Red Dawn” is coming out, too.

JH : Red Dawn was great. As Vanessa was saying before, it’s like playing pretend – being a little kid – doing these movies, and when I was a little kid I’d play army… so I was just playing army, as far as I was concerned. They gave me real guns – which is scary and exciting. But I’m really excited for that to come out finally.

We Chat One on One with Vanessa Hudgens & Josh Hutcherson About All Things Fun & Mysterious

As we know Vanessa Hudgens and Josh Hutcherson are on the promo trail for their latest movie Journey 2: Mysterious Island and we were lucky enough to sit down with the super sweet pair one on one when they were visiting Melbourne to talk all things Mysterious Island, Vanessa’s love of yoga and may be she’ll be releasing a yoga video and how Josh wants to talk about his family all the time, he loves his family:

Bronny: Lovely to see you again after the excitement of yesterday’s red carpet! It was pretty crazy, how did that feel?

Josh: It was pretty out there! It was exciting to see so many people who had come out to support the movie and screaming and being excited, it was cool!

Bronny: Girls made posters and I think you even got a marriage proposal, I was waiting for you to get down on bended knee!

Josh: Yeah I got proposed too which was a first for me, which was exciting, I respectfully declined, at this point in my life a wife is too much for me to handle.

Bronny: And how did you find it getting the opportunity to work with a legend like Michael Caine?

Vanessa: It was incredible, I’m such a big fan of all his work, and being able to be on the set with him, listening to him deliver these epic monologues, I just got so sucked in and then I’d be like ‘oh, I have a line! I’m acting as well’! He’s just incredible and so down to earth after everything.

Bronny: The main thing that struck me about the movie was how active you had to be and the action taking place. You were either running to or from something. How did you both prepare physically for the role or are you both just naturally fit?

Josh: I’m naturally very fit … no, I play a lot of sports, a lot of soccer and basketball so for me I was in pretty good shape, but there were definitely times that I was pretty winded at the end of a take.

Vanessa: It’s fun, I mean I love staying fit, going to any kind of work out class, you take me, I’ll do it.

Bronny: Vanessa, how have you found the transition from musical to action movies?

Vanessa: It’s all fun and games at the end of the day, it’s just a different genre, I do enjoy singing and dancing, even during this one there was a lot of that going on off camera, so it really never ends, but it’s fun and I love branching out and trying different genres.

Bronny: In this film you carried a Ukalayli around for most of it, did you want to take it home with you at the end of it?

Vanessa: I actually had no attachment to it, it kept hitting people so I found it quite annoying, I would turn too fast and hit Josh in the face.

Josh: Yeah, that Ukalayli was whacking everybody.

Bronny: The Rock and his little song, was that improvised or part of the actual scene?

Josh: That was all part of the actual scene, I had no idea he was so multi-talented and had such an angelic voice!

Bronny: Those underwater scenes, I have to admit to being claustrophobic, I was cringing watching you! How did you prepare for something like that?

Josh: Well we got scuba certified at the beginning to do all the water action we did. Vanessa was already certified because she’s such a gun, but we all had to get certified. They actually built this giant 100,000 gallon tank on a sound stage in North Carolina and that’s where they shot all the swimming sequences and they actually built the Nautilus inside the tanks, like on top of the deck when we were unscrewing the lids etc, it was pretty intense. It was funny because the first time I saw the movie, literally as the water goes down in the Nautilus and we take our first breath, literally everybody took a big breath like ‘now I can breathe as well.’

Vanessa: Yeah, I would be holding my breath with you guys.

Bronny: And what was your favorite aspect of the movie?

Vanessa: Just the experience in general, filming in Hawaii, working in Paradise, so incredible, just the whole feeling and vibe, everybody at work is so laid back.

Josh: Everyone wears board shorts and flip flops and making a movie, it was really cool, you get sucked into the whole Island vibe, where you’re just laid back and nothing’s a big deal and everything will take care of itself one way or the other, everybody was there to just do their job and make a movie.

Bronny: And what would be your dream movie role be?

Josh: For me, I just want to do things that are different, I think as an actor (and I’m probably stealing Vanessa’s answer) one of the best parts is getting to play different characters in different situations from different walks of life. And for me I just find people fascinating, so as many different types of people I can play, that’s what I want to do.

Vanessa: Ditto!

Bronny: And how do you both switch off during your down time?

Vanessa: Vacations and yoga! I do a lot of yoga.

Bronny: Vanessa, you’ve been looking stunning on the red carpet, we’ve been loving your outfits. What’s your favorite hair & makeup look?

Vanessa: I think just recently at the People’s Choice Awards we did this really neat cat eye smokey look, with this really cool pinned back hair version, it was kind of a take on Charlize Theron’s Dior ads. So it was just really fun putting our own spin on that. [Ed's Note: Vanessa wore a sheer black Jenny Packham dress.]

Bronny: And for the red carpet when you’re thinking about how to make an impression do you work with a stylist or is it 100% you?

Vanessa: I work with a stylist but she gets me, it’s really hard because I’m very specific and meticulous with what I wear so she understands my style and helps me fulfill my goals and what I want.

Josh: Yeah, one time I went with Vanessa for one of her styling fittings and I was there for like five hours.

Vanessa: It was like two!

Josh: It seemed like five! But seriously, it was amazing to watch, they have this amazing connection and they were both jamming back and forth ‘I want it like the 30s’ or ‘the 50s’. It’s awesome to watch.

Bronny: And what’s next for both of you?

Josh: Well we’re promoting this film and just traveling around the world doing that and then there’s the Hunger Games so I’ll be promoting that, so lots of promoting for me.

Bronny: And just one more question! What would be the one question that you wish you would get asked and nobody ever asks you?

Josh: Oh man! I wish people would ask me about my family because they are my passion and I just love them and I love talking about them and could talk about them for hours.

Vanessa: Yoga! I love yoga or the Beatles!

Bronny: You should do your own yoga video!

Vanessa: Yeah – that would be great!

Josh: You totally should!

Bronny: Thanks so much for your time guys, congratulations on the movie, I really loved it and you did a great job!

Vanessa Hudgens: Michael Caine is a legend, he's so inspiring and hip
High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens talks to Metro about kissing co-stars, why Call Of Duty is her guilty pleasure and what it was like working with Michael Caine on Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

How much fun was it meeting Michael Caine and his wife, Shakira?
I adore Michael and Shakira. Meeting them made me look forward to getting older because they are so secure about who they are and they speak their mind. There’s no fakeness. Michael’s a legend and he’s so inspiring and so hip. He was singing Beyoncé and Katy Perry songs. I was sitting next to him in between set-ups and he was singing: ‘Baby, you’re a firework…’ I adore him.
What was it like kissing your co-star, Josh Hutcherson?
When you are playing a character, you have to think: ‘This is not me, this is somebody else kissing.’ But we are friends. It helps when it’s somebody that you’re friends with because you have a mutual understanding.
What film roles interest you?
I really love adventure, stepping into the unknown. The last character I played was a homeless abused teen [Gimme Shelter]. I got thrown around a lot, both physically and emotionally. Every day I was pushing myself to the extreme. In the next film I’m doing, I’m playing a prostitute/stripper/drug addict [The Frozen Ground]. Playing troubled characters has helped me appreciate my life and it’s made me truly enjoy each moment and to stay present because we never know what tomorrow will bring.
Who inspires you?
My mum. She is the most positive person I know and I love being around her. When I was younger, I would think: ‘Why is she giggling all the time? It’s annoying.’ Now I just think she is so genuinely happy, and it’s great. I find the more positive you are, the more positive things come your way.
Who do you turn to when you really need someone to cheer you up?
My mum. If anything goes wrong, I know I can call her. When I’m sick, she will come over and take care of me. She’s always there if I need to have a heart-to-heart.
Is that your role now for your younger sister, Stella?
I know my sister looks up to me and I adore her just as much. I think she is the most incredible old soul that I know. She is 15 going on 25. She is so cool.
What have you learned about relationships over the years?
I think people shouldn’t be in a relationship until they fully love themselves. I think that’s important because, if you don’t love yourself, you are not going to make yourself happy, so how can you make someone else happy? Young relationships are silly and fun – you have to do it to experience and learn and grow. But you have to love yourself, not even to have a relationship, just to be happy.
What’s your ideal date?
There’s a lot of good music out there right now, so a concert and dinner is good with me. I love the energy at concerts. Everyone is always happy and up for a good time. Who doesn’t love music?
What do you do to relax?
People think I am a girly girl but I love camping. I can totally rough it: no bathrooms, no showers. I love swimming in the lakes, going cliff jumping, making campfires and being out in nature.
What do you prefer, camping or five-star hotels?
I love both. It’s nice to be able to rough it and lie under the stars and be in nature and hear the crickets. It makes you feel minuscule in the world. But then it’s nice to be in a hotel and sleep in a cosy bed.
If you go away somewhere remote, do you leave your phone behind?
I love leaving my phone at home. It makes me so happy. It’s too much to have it all the time; there’s always someone trying to get hold of you. But I bring music. I need music everywhere I go, so I bring my little portable speakers. But it’s not the kind of music I listen to in LA. I go for Mumford & Sons. It’s relaxing music, a little bit funkier.
How important is friendship?
I’ve never had many friends. I’ve had a lot of acquaintances but only a very small group of friends. Because I’m working so much, I need to be able to go away and not talk to them for two months and then come back and pick right up where we left off.
What are your favourite luxuries?
I love going to the spa and getting my nails done. I love nail art. In Japan, they have the craziest designs, such as Hello Kitty – they are bedazzling and amazing. I am such a girly girl when it comes to that stuff.
Any guilty pleasures?
Call Of Duty. I did not grow up a tomboy and I didn’t have much time on the Xbox. But, just recently, I have had the luxury of having one and I love playing Call Of Duty. It is so much fun. It’s like a super-realistic battle game. You get to run around, go on missions and shoot people [laughs].

I've been here before, I remember the last time was with the High School Musical tour. The love and energy shown by the fans was incredible. That is a very special memory I have of Mexico, a memorable experience

- Do you have any plans for the future?

And that tattoo on your wrist, Josh? What is it?

JOSH: I think also important to the magic behind the story in the sense of the emotional journey beyond the adventurous journey. Human emotions are something with which everyone can relate to. And you, Vanessa? What have you learned from this movie?

VANESSA: I think I learned a lot from my character, she's incredible. She is strong, fight for what every woman should want to fight. She knows about female empowerment. I love her relationship with her father, it is well superpróximo and family.
